Flower Care Guide
Fresh flowers usually last 5–7 days in Singapore. These simple steps can add several days to that.
Fresh bouquets: the 5-step routine
- Unwrap within a few hours. Remove the wrapping and the hydration pack.
- Recut the stems. Trim 2 cm at a 45° angle with sharp scissors.
- Strip low leaves. Remove any leaves that would sit below the waterline.
- Use a clean vase. Fill two-thirds with cool water and add flower food.
- Refresh every two days. Change the water, rinse the vase and recut the stems.
Where to place your flowers
Keep flowers away from direct sun, air-conditioning vents and fruit bowls (ripening fruit releases ethylene, which ages flowers). In Singapore’s heat, a cooler room overnight makes a noticeable difference.
How long different flowers last
| Flower | Typical vase life |
|---|---|
| Orchids | 10–14 days |
| Chrysanthemums, carnations | 10–14 days |
| Roses | 5–7 days |
| Sunflowers | 6–10 days |
| Tulips | 4–6 days |
| Hydrangeas | 4–6 days (needs lots of water) |
Arrangements and baskets
Top up the water or floral foam daily. Foam should always feel damp. Remove spent blooms to keep the arrangement looking fresh.
Preserved and dried flowers
Never water them. Keep them dry, out of direct sunlight and away from humid rooms. Dust gently with a soft brush. Read preserved vs dried flowers for more.

Flower care questions
How long do fresh flowers last?
Most fresh bouquets last 5–7 days. Orchids, chrysanthemums and carnations can last two weeks; tulips and hydrangeas are shorter-lived in warm rooms.
Should I add sugar or bleach to the water?
Use the flower food sachet if included. Otherwise, clean water changed every two days works better than home remedies.
Why are my hydrangeas wilting?
Hydrangeas drink through their petals as well as stems. Submerge the whole head in cool water for 30 minutes, recut the stem and return to a full vase.
